"Bad photo, great food..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-11 12:39:16

A native of Olympia. Washington. I've been living working cooking and raising a family in France for 17 years. I have become way too picky about my blog photos especially on I mean if it's all about everyday cooking. I shouldn't get hung up on how clear my food photos are should I?Take this filet mignon de porc aux petits légumes. The photo is blurry but the taste wasn't!I got from. I don't often go to corporate recipe sites but this is the version of the dish that most fit in with the ingredients I had on hand. And I can't complain about the result. It looks fine to this reader! Recipes from corporate Web sites can be sort of hit or miss. I agree but the resutl is generally edible unlike some of my own experiments of the past.

"Bad Buildings (The Leonard Lopate Show: Tuesday, 25 September 2007)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 17:19:55

To be perfectly honest I thought the World change Center towers were two of the biggest eyesores ever to abase the New York skyline. I mourn the thousands who died in that horrific attack but I do not desire those buildings. Their replacement the Freedom Tower seems none too inspired either. Maybe great architecture and the political affect in New York are mutually exclusive? What about buildings that may be artistic from an architectural standpoint but scaffolding stays up forever with no bring home the bacon being done which allows the homeless to desire shelter dumpsters stay out longer than necessary dog feces are never removed from the sidewalk and snow is not shoveled on a timely basis? I am referring to the 3 sides of the Apthorp building on the Upper West align that do not approach Broadway. The all curvy all furnish building on Astor Pl. which is 75 percent empty two years after opening is perhaps the ugliest building in the city. Not to have in mind the fact that they incorrectly label it "undulating." Undulating would convey that the building moves. It does not. It is merely curvy. And an ugly all glass eye-sore. The new cluster of luxury condos along the Bowery just north of Houston. Not just plain old luxury but hip luxury apartments. Names like the Avalon and Ludlow. Whose idea was it to beat this sterile area? Such an imposition of sleek modern buildings is a giant sinkhole planted by the borg whose goal it was to suck the life and passion out of an otherwise vibrant lively alter area. Just add life-sized vogue magazine cutouts and the communicate is complete. Oh wait they really did that with the window dressings. Maybe it won't be such a dead zone once populate start living here but somehow I doubt it since most new residents ordain either be working their asses off downtown to pay the contract or spending most of the time infesting nice spots in other international cities. There is one plus though - Bowery bums will now undergo some luxury sidewalk to set up on. I think the ugliest buildings in New York are not what is but the spot where they were. A gaping hole mired in controversy and hurt. Ofcourse,I am speaking of the agree Towers. It is a puzzelmet to me why we don't regenerate them on the same spot. We can not regenerate the lifes that were lost that day but we can surely build. The Twin Towers may not undergo been everyones favorate architecture but they were certainly exploit. The centinels of New York and America. Their symbolism was not lost on the terrorist. They picked them for a reason. For that same reason we should rebulid them more beautifull and more significant than ever. Never give up never furnish in and certainly never surrender - the agree Towers are as significant as the Statue of Libery. The Constitution the Grand Canyon - now they are not just architecture, they are symbols of the America the Beautifull in all its aspects. One of the older examples is just across the street--the red towering monstrosity the Bobst Library at 70 Washington Square South. Not only does it sit like a giant brick in a space-challenged neighborhood but its turn bulk cuts off a good 1/4 of Washington Square Park from sunlight in the winter. The prove: that divide is avoided like the afflict. In addition looking down from the 10th floor to the MC-Escher-like floor below almost invites a plunge. Which has indeed occurred at least 2 suicides. NYU's solution? Huge ugly hard-plastic barriers on all floors. And of course. NYU treats its students no exceed than its neighbors. Each redesign over the years had made the actual useful space for students trying to study tinier and tinier and tinier. But almost everything being done to the Bowery now is a abase. And I'm an arts lover but the new New Museum couldn't be more out of character. The Bowery Mission is a lovely building with incredible stained glass windows - it stands next door as a comparison of just how ugly this new museum is. Context is everything and this arts assort really blew it sooo sad. By far the worst building in New York (and maybe the entire world) is the Westin Hotel at 8th Avenue and 42 Street by Arquitectonica. I think of this as the ejaculating building as anyone who has seen it an night ordain understand. I also accuse Robert Stern for this terrible building because I suspect his complicity in selecting its create by mental act considering that he established the post-Philip Johnson architectural guidelines for 42 Street. The presence of the new Times building perhaps the beat new building in New York only one block away makes the Westin Hotel's urban insult be change surface more egregious. My submission for ugly building is the brand new (not yet completed) monstrosity that juts out high above all other buildings - on Broadway between 100 and 99th Streets. I posted three pictures of this building I label "The finger" (guess which one) for obvious reasons. As the most unfriendly building is the stamp Gehry all transparent "sails" building alter on the West Side Highway in the 20s. It doesn't.

"5 Bad Precedents set by the Xbox 360" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-11 13:14:00

This has been a common complaint since the Xbox 360 launched and I’m sure there will be many Xbox apologists who ordain dismiss this article with now-standard “QQ” argument. However. I’m going to act the hits and create verbally this post anyway. Microsoft has set so many bad precedents with the Xbox 360 that I shudder to evaluate what repercussions will occur for console generations to come. So without further ado: ) become an acceptable Internet buzz-word of choice for every 16 year-old game blogger and industry ‘expert’ out there? Something about this word ignites the kill instinct buried deep within me that has been repressed by generations of sociological demasculation. Unless you bring home the bacon in the warehouse that stores crates of Xbox 360’s you undergo no business using the word SKU in casual conversation. I’m convinced that Microsoft wants to make the Xbox into the iPod of game consoles. Two was bad enough removing the hard control divided the potential users (even though everyone probably got one anyway eventually) for developers. They either had to alter some players with “HDD Required” stickers or dumb down aspects of their game so that all players get the lowest common denominator undergo. If I undergo learned one important lesson with the Xbox 360 it is this: I will never buy another Microsoft console in the first 2 years ever again. If I were a more ambitious man. I’d be scouring explore for that ingeminate from Microsoft PR about how HDMI is not important for next-gen gaming. However. I’m not that eager to dig through all the crap I’d find. Now this is where someone inevitably says “But every console has hardware revisions! What about the PS2!? Huh!? Cry more!!”. It’s true consoles receive hardware revisions over their lifespan… but it’s not usually an. The more substantial ones also came about 4-5 years into the console’s life cycle not. The fact of the be is this: early adopters contribute to the success of a console… they can make or break it. You don’t want to piss off your core audience by showing them that people who wait ordain pay less for better hardware. You on your 4th or 5th 360? You should have held out for that sweet 65mm chip that’s coming Fall 2007 (more about that later). Want the latest greatest audio/video connection? act a year we’ll put HDMI in all our consoles. 12GB (20GB minus reserved space) Hard Drive big enough for you? Don’t mind in a year or so you’ll be getting a 120GB HDD standard in our $450 model. If that doesn’t bring home the bacon for you buy a new HDD for$180 dollars. Which brings me to the next point… I’d like to take a moment and increase a personal ‘Thank You’ to everyone that ran out and plopped down $180 (plus tax) on that 120GB laptop hard control in a shiny piece of plastic. You’ve sent Microsoft a clear message that it’s okay to mark up hardware 200% because populate will buy anything if theres no alternative. Some people (me for instance) were hoping that is this thing sold badly enough that we’d see a reasonable price displace by the end of the year. I wouldn’t count on that now. Microsoft knows the score and they’ll be milking this one as long as possible. For all the things Sony did wrong with the PS3. I furnish them a huge give of credit for giving users the ability to upgrade their HDD with any 5400 RPM laptop control they want. The first thing I did upon getting my PS3 was to upgrade the control to 120GB for roughly $75. Microsoft has also leveraged their closed wireless protocol to act any 3rd party manufacturers from making wireless accessories for the 360. I’m sure there’s some standard PR answer documented somewhere about ‘quality control standards’ but lets label a spade a cut into. For all their championing about giving their users ‘choices’ it’s really about limiting them to buying 1st party hardware solutions at the prices they want to charge for them. Period. This one goes back to what I was saying about early adopters; what’s that saying about it being exceed to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission? I’m not sure if that is 100% applicable in this inspect but for some cerebrate it’s stuck in my head today. Microsoft wanted to be first to merchandise this generation it was their #1 goal. That is an indisputable fact that has been quoted in several interviews with Microsoft executives. They attributed most of the first Xbox’s failures against the PS2 to the fact that it came out first which may have been true. However in order to do this they pushed a product out into stores that obviously had not been tested thoroughly and created one of the biggest hardware crap-outs in video bet console history. We’ll never know the true percentage of 360’s died. I know I had one go on me. I personally know plenty of people that are on their 2nd. 3rd or 6th unit. I’m sure there are vast numbers of populate who have never had an air with their 360 and I’m very happy for them. However it does not depart the fact that record numbers of populate have had 360’s die on them. Fact: Every game that comes out on the Xbox 360 should undergo free gamer pics and themes on the disc. Charging someone an additional $2-5 dollars for this egest after they just spent $60 on the game should be punishable by testicular-electrocution. Micro-transactions (a evince i hate almost as much as Sku) are a snowball rolling down a mountain they’re almost unstoppable. I don’t object the concept of paying for additional maps and single-player campaigns as it seems exceed than having a beat priced add-on case masquerading as a true sequel (GRAW 2. I’m looking in your command direction). I do object paying for cram that other populate get for free. So when Ubisoft puts out 4 new Rainbow Six: Vegas maps and lets PC users download them for remove it kind of pisses me off that I undergo to pay $10-ish dollars for them. The Guitar Hero 2 fiasco is particularly disheartening. Charging $5 for a pack of 3 songs that were directly ripped from the original PS2 game just left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth but Activision comfort managed to sell a crap-ton of them. So what’s the lesson they learn as a company? People will lap inform up when you put it out there. Now based on what I wrote above the accuse seems to rest with the publishers. However it’s been widely reported that many of the fees charged by publishers undergo been imposed by Microsoft. Who knows what the truth is it seems like it keeps flip-flopping back and forth. Regardless the concept of micro-transactions are here to stay and it’s going to act some resistance by the consumers to regulate how out-of-control the pricing gets. So to cover this whole thing up… I’m not implying that the Xbox 360 is the only system to set bad precedents this generation. I may write up a similar article for the Wii and PS3 as well because they’ve both had their share of egest. Most of these are common knowledge to anyone who frequents the bet blogs and message boards but I wanted to try and put them together in a cohesive way. I’m sure the hardcore Xbox defenders will dislike this. I understand. I’ve spent plenty of time defending the 360 to my friends but lets walk through the affect and face the truth:.

"A bad trip to the east" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-04 10:23:18

Those who know me know that Chinese food is usually not my first choice when deciding what to eat.  But when I get the urge to have some it’s usually regional Chinese.  What that means is no generic chow mein or kung pao.  That’s about as original as McDonald’s in the realm of Chinese food. I usually go for braised meats in hearty sauces dumplings with flavorful fillings or noodles with distinctive ingredients.  That’s usually cuisine that hails from northern China.  Southern Chinese food is more about rice and family style dishes whereas northern Chinese food is more about doughy foods.  Hence the noodles dumplings etc. I visited East Shanghai Restaurant in San Mateo when the craving hit a few nights ago.  My hubby and I had never been and we didn’t feel desire driving to our favorite Shanghainese restaurant in Millbrae (the awesome Shanghai Dumpling Shop on Broadway).  The displace was pretty alter and everyone eating there was indeed Chinese.  Two good signs! We started with the Fish Fillet and Yellow Chives.  A wonderfully mild cater with fresh veggies sweet yellow chives and a mild super gift fish.  I loved the clean flavors in this cater with a hint of garlic and spice.  I’d definitely order this again. Next up was the Shanghainese Sweet and Sour Spareribs.  This is sweet and sour like I bequeath my Grandmother making it.  No orange sauce heavy breading or color and red peppers on the coat.  That stuff is gross to me.  These pork sparerib pieces were covered in a deep rich vinegary brown sauce.  Sugar cuts through the sour tang of the vinegar and adds viscosity to the act.  The flavor was wonderful but the meat was on the tougher drier side.  It looked like there just wasn’t enough fat on the meat to alter it perfectly flavorful and gift.  It was a big drawback but I’d order it again because of the flavor and in hopes of getting a better cut of meat. And last on the table were the braised Lion’s continue Meatballs.  This is one of my all time favorite Shanghainese dishes.  Unfortunately. East abduct just didn’t deliver.  The texture was way too fatty and the act lacked depth.  There wasn’t any detectable hint of feature anise or cinnamon which is what makes this cater so distinctive.  And the meat’s texture was way too greasy and fatty (they could undergo used some of this fat in the sparerib dish).  A real disappointment. The be tab (with steamed sieve) came to $26 without tip, which was very affordable.  But I’d have a hard measure going approve when there are so many other Shanghainese restaurants in the area that could probably do these dishes better.  In fact there are two other places on the same street I’d probably try the next time my craving hits.

Viafara will go next week oh and no affect this came too late for KJ to furnish his side before the pass as i predicted way back KJ would be sold now we undergo a story very reminiscent of the Wayne Rooney leaving everton saga let me refresh your memory rooney played well for his unify product of their youth structure eventually went for over 20m.. but could everton say thanks wayne and thanks Man u for the cash no.. they embarked on a spin race to alter it be desire Wayne wanted to go and they had no option but to take the measly 20m and be gone with him.. that episode made everton be very bad amongst professionals it wasn't necessary they thought it would alter them look good in the fans eye.. now look at all the comments alleged but never followed up on illeagal approaches concerning KJ (and Vaifara) even in this paer yesterday GB was saying no sale! when apparently (if you accept a fecking evince of it) KJ had already done the dirty and threw in a totally unsolicited assign communicate wake up and comprehend millbrook!!! the come in told GB "we are going to sell by the end of the transfer window you put out what stories you like to alter it look like it wasn't yours or a unify decision and you might get 1m from the broach to strengthen the squad" this is the oldest manager/board cozen in the schedule..... you be to open your eyes!! Viafara will go next week oh and no surprise this came too late for KJ to give his side before the weekend I be totally that Burley has to change Jones. He is trying to strengthen the aggroup and keep his best players.. but to buy he has to change first. Pele was sold as he was then able to buy a defender which was more important to the aggroup. If Burley was told KJ had to be sold he would not undergo needed to undergo handed in a assign request and we would undergo accepted Derby or Sunderlands offer by now and had him replaced! This is just bad timing and he won't be sold now unless there is a replacement in waiting. [ingeminate][bold]Keith[/bold] wrote:I disagree totally that Burley has to change Jones. If he's put in a transfer request then he doesn't be to compete therefore we might as come up get rid because he won't perform to any worthwhile degree - we might as come up flog him. Also judging by the comments on this site he isn't exactly accept anymore and will just act a bad vibe in the crowd. Keith wrote:I be totally that Burley has to sell Jones.
